Auction - QinetiQ Ltd (UK)
The collection of ships offered for auction are all commissioned custom hand built to a 1/50th scale from copper by craftsman (Pre DERA) in the late 1970’s to the mid 1980’s, their purpose was not for display but for the signature data collection specific to the ship that they represent.
They are all manufactured from soldered copper, and have hollow flat drop bottom hulls.
We do not have the weights of all the ships but as an example the Royal Yacht Britannia weighs in at 60KG.

1. HMS Fearless - Royal Navy ship, served 1965 - 2002. One of two LPD class based in Portsmouth. In service for 37 years including the Falklands conflict. Last steam powered ship in the Royal Navy.

2. HMS Illustrious – Royal Navy invincible class light aircraft carrier, completed in the early 1980’s. The second aircraft carrier called ‘Illustrious’. Served in the Falklands, the Gulf War and Bosnia amongst others.

3. HMS Invincible – Royal Navy light aircraft carrier, lead ship of three in the class, completed April/ May 1977. Served in the Falklands, Yugoslav and Iraq Wars amongst others. Decommissioned and scrapped 2005.

4. HMS Broadsword – Royal Navy type 22 Frigate, lead ship. Called into service on sea trials when storms struck the 1979 Fastnet race. Served in the Falklands and Yugoslav Wars amongst others. Decommissioned 1995.

5. HMS Brave – Royal Navy type 22 Frigate, completed November 1983. Served in the Gulf war, Iraq war and made many patrols of the waters around the UK. Decommissioned in 2004.

7. RAF Grey Rover (Rovergrey) – Royal Fleet Auxiliary Vessel, completed April 1969. Served as a floating Tanker. Decommissioned in February 2006.

8. HMS Boxer – Royal Navy type 22 Frigate, completed June 1981. One of two Batch 2 vessels built to accommodate Lynx helicopters. Decommissioned August 1999.

9. HMS Birmingham – Royal Navy type 42 (or Sheffield class) destroyers, completed July 1973. Two type 42’s (Sheffield & Coventry) sunk during Falklands conflict. Decommissioned December 1999.

10. Leander Class Frigate Batch 2 – Royal Navy (Type 121) frigates, Batch 2 completed between December 1975 & January 1982 with Exocet conversion. Decommissioned / Sunk / Scrapped between 1989 & 2004.

11. HMS Challenger – Royal Navy unique vessel, completed May 1981. Built to support deep sea operations and saturation diving. Made first diamond recoveries in 2000 and bought by De Beers in 2003. Still in operation.

12. HMS Manchester - Royal Navy type 42 (Batch 3) destroyers, completed November 1980. 50% of the ships company was taken from Sheffield & Coventry (type 42’s)) sunk during Falklands conflict. Decommissioned February 2011.

13. HMS Ajax – Royal Navy Leander class frigate, completed August 1962. Deployed to the far East, became the Gibralter guard ship in 1970 and assisted in the evacuation of British citizens from Cyprus in 1974. Decommissioned May 1985. Scrapped 1988.

14. Type 22 Frigate Batch – Royal Navy Broadsword class. Fourteen of this class were built in total divided into three batches. HMS Cornwall was the last type 22 retired in June 2011. Completed between May 1976 and January 1988.

15. HMS Campbeltown – Royal Navy Type 22 (Batch 3) frigate, completed October 1987. Batch 3 frigates were considerably larger than batch 1&2 and incorporated advanced weaponry. Capable of carrying two Lynx Mk.8 helicopters. Decommissioned April 2011.

16. HMS Glamorgan – Royal Navy County-class destroyer, completed July 1964. Hit by MM-38 Exocet missile in the Falklands war causing damage and Killing 14 Sailors. Sold to Chilean Navy in 1986 and decommissioned in late 1998.

17. HMY Royal Yacht Britannia – Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia is the former yacht of Queen Elizabeth II which was in service from 1954 to 1997. Built at the shipyard of John Brown & Co Ltd in Clydebank at 5,769GT with a length of 412ft, Beam of 55ft and capacity of 250 guests. During her service the Royal Yacht conveyed the Queen, Royal Family and Dignitaries on 696 foreign visits and 272 visits in British waters. Charles and Diana, the Prince and Princess of Wales, spent their honeymoon aboard in 1981. Now permanently moored as an exhibition ship at Ocean Terminal, Leith, Edinburgh.
